The Buckeyes and Their Quarterbacks

Down the road from Toledo, this fall in Columbus we witnessed one of the most interesting quarterback position battles in recent college football history.   After winning the first ever College Football Playoff in January, Ohio State (OSU) was immediately staring at an unprecedented type of quarterback controversy.  How would it all turn out?  And what unique skills did each of the three candidates bring to the table?

Three Quarterback Candidates at OSU

Braxton Miller lead the team to a 12-2 record in 2013, and was named the Big 10 Offensive Player of the Year.  When he was ruled out for the 2014 season with a shoulder injury, J.T. Barrett won the starting job and played his way into Heisman consideration...before breaking his ankle in the regular season finale against Michigan.  That's when Cardale Jones was thrust into the spotlight, and asked to simply go out and beat Alabama in the College Football Playoff Semifinal, and then Oregon in the Championship Game--which is precisely what he did.

Who Would be the Starter at OSU in 2015?

With all three players returning healthy for the 2015 campaign, who would win the starting job, and why?  Each player possesses a different skill set, and deciding which of them gives the team the best chance to win was a lot to ask of Coach Urban Meyer.  Braxton Miller's position change to receiver in fall camp narrowed the candidate pool to two, but hardly made the decision easier.  Let's take a closer look at the two left vying for the starting spot:
  • J.T. Barrett - has a more extensive résumé, and played a fantastic 2014 season before being hurt against Michigan.  He is the more mobile of the two quarterbacks, and can hurt you with his legs as well as his arm.
  • Cardale Jones - incredible performances against Alabama and Oregon after being unexpectedly asked to carry the load for the most important games in many years for the Buckeyes.  Has a great arm and showed incredible poise in his 2+ games.

Which Skills Will Prove to be More Valuable?

The 2015 season will unfold with great intrigue as we watch and see whether Urban Meyer made the right choice.  Regardless of how it plays out, one thing we know for sure is that each of the candidates have spent many years training to become the best in their particular sport.  At Athletic Republic, we offer sports training in Toledo that can help you gain the skills necessary to become an elite athlete like those at OSU.  We offer sport-specific, cutting edge training to athletes from all over the region, and our methods have proven to be highly successful.
