If you’re an athlete, then you know that strength training can bring with it a myriad of different benefits. It helps you become more agile, it builds muscle, it allows you to improve in your endurance, it makes you more flexible, and may even prevent you from getting injured as easily. However, if you want to reap these benefits, you need to strength train the right way. If you’d like a few tips on the matter, continue reading!

How to Strength Train

  1. Work with a trainer and let them know what your goals are, what you’re capable of, and what you need from them.
  2. Create a routine with your trainer that will allow you to work little by little and in a safe manner towards your established goals.
  3. Make sure that your routine is balanced enough and that will help you work on different areas of your body.
  4. Keep in mind that if you use too much weight as you’re starting out, you may get injured. Instead, try doing more reps with lighter weights.
  5. During your training sessions, make sure to do some light cardio to increase your heart rate and warm up before you begin, and to stretch afterwards to cool down.
  6. If possible, do compound movements that tackle different muscle groups at a time so you can make your workout more efficient.
  7. Always, always, always keep good form during weight training. Not doing so will prevent you from getting the results you want, and may even get you injured.
  8. When you’re working out, make sure to engage your whole body and mind during every repetition so you can achieve your goals.
  9. Switch up and increase your routine every couple of weeks as your body can get used to it pretty fast. Again, try not to rush into anything so you don’t get injured.
  10. Once you’re done, help your body recover by eating a protein-filled meal that will allow your muscles to rebuild.
  11. If you want to keep getting better, you will also need to rest appropriately after each session, and to schedule a day a week to recuperate. ;
  12. If at some point you feel that something isn’t working for you, talk to your trainer to see what’s going on and what you can do to fix it.
