As an athlete, we are sure you are aware of the importance of staying hydrated while working out and/or competing. However, if you need a reminder, we at Athletic Republic in Toledo would love to share some of the major reasons it is important to stay hydrated, as well as some tips on how to best go about that!

Why It’s Important:

You may already know this, but it’s never too late to be reminded of why we need to stay hydrated!

- Especially as an athlete, it’s so important that your joints stay lubricated to aid in movement
- Your liquid intake helps to move along the important nutrients your body needs ;
- The temperature of your body is regulated

How Much Water is Enough:

The American Council on Fitness provides some rather extensive suggestions as to how you can determine what your water intake should be: ;

- 2 to 3 hours before you begin your workout, you should drink between 17 and 20 ounces of water
- Every 10 minutes while exercising, be conscientious and drink 7 to 10 ounces of water
- At least another 8 ounces should be consumed after you’ve finished your workout-around 20 or 30 minutes after ;

While dehydration should not be taken lightly, it may not be necessary to carry each of these rules in your mind all the time. You could post them in a place you’ll be able to see preworkout, or while working out if you have a home gym, however pay attention to your body. If you’re in need of water, you’ll begin to notice, and be sure to pay attention to the signs of dehydration!

Dehydration Symptoms

- Are you nauseous or vomiting?
- Do you have irregular muscle cramps or stiffening of the joints? ;
- Have you completely quit sweating? ;
- Is your mouth feeling dry? ;

If you are beginning to feel the signs, you may be able to recover by drinking water, however if the signs do not let up be sure to seek attention from a medical professional.

Proper hydration is of course crucial, but unfortunately it is far from the only thing you as an athlete need to be concerned about. You’ve got to make sure you’re eating right, sleeping right, and even that you have the right shoes. Luckily, we can help with everything.
