Of course we all know about the long-term benefits of a proper exercise regimen, especially those of us that are focused on developing as performance athletes, but working out also provides wonderful short-term benefits. Let Athletic Republic in Toledo talk you through some of these benefits and we’re sure you’ll find it easier to motivate yourself to train even when it’s the last thing you want to do!

It’s great for your mood

First and possibly most important, exercise is perhaps unrivalled as a natural mood-enhancer. Working out stimulates the production of mood-boosting endorphins such as dopamine and serotonin which work to make you feel happier. It’s also a fantastic form of stress-relief, both chemically and in terms of offering you the opportunity to blow off some steam and work though any negative feelings.

It provides a tremendous boost to self-esteem

Smashing through a workout, especially if you felt weak or unmotivated beforehand, can make you feel on top of the world. Meeting or exceeding your goals is a brilliant way to feel more confident and self-assured too; there’s nothing like setting yourself a challenge and then seeing your grit and determination pay off.

It promotes good sleep

If you want to sleep well, exercise is a must. Long-term exercise programs have been found to be extremely beneficial for maintaining regular sleep patterns and quality of sleep, but if you’re struggling to get a good night’s sleep a mammoth cardio session should provide a short-term solution, too. Just make sure you exercise in the morning or afternoon, not too short a time before you want to sleep, as a workout will provide you with a short-term energy spike and prevent you nodding off.

It wakes up your brain

As we just mentioned, exercise really wakes you up for a while, and this is true of both the brain and the body. Studies have shown that aerobic exercise a short while before a test is strongly linked with higher scores, possibly due to increased blood flow to the brain. If you need to get some work done, try working out first!

It’s fun!

Last and certainly not least, exercise can be great fun. You may be aching or sore beforehand, so it can be hard to imagine more exercise bringing anything besides pain, but if you can push yourself to get started you’ll quickly remember how enjoyable it can be. If you really aren’t enjoying your exercise, consider picking a different form of workout; there’s no reason not to be having fun out there!
